Too Black and Too Fast
Join artist and historian Michael McBride for a talk on the story of the African American jockey. Starting in 1991, McBride has researched this lost history documenting that African Americans have been involved in horse racing in America in 1607, and ruled the sport from 1607-1910. The first riders were enslave, and often young boys between 13-15 years old. The history of the sport of horse racing is rich in its diversity and intertwined with the achievements of African American horsemen. McBride’s talk will be illustrated with his and other artist’s works.
